Fall Foliage – Tokyo Temple with HDR

Fall foliage on the grounds of the Meiji Temple in Tokyo (HDR)
At the suggestion of a friend in the 3D graphics business (thanks Neil!) I experiment with High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography a few years ago while shooting in Tokyo. For HDR, which is now a feature in the latest iPhone operating system, you take several identically positioned photos with different exposures to encompass detail in highlights, detail in shadows, and detail in midtones, and HDR software munges it all together for you to create a version of the image with greater dynamic range. Above is one of my first attempts at HDR, from the grounds of the Meiji Temple in Tokyo.

Man-Made Circles – The Bullfighting Ring at Ronda

The bullfighting arena in Ronda
Reportedly the oldest (or second oldest) operational bullfighting ring in the world, the one in Ronda, Spain has incredible form and the light color of the sand provides excellent contrast to the structure and darkness of the stands.

Animal Agility – The Giraffe Tongue

What a tongue
A giraffe’s tongue is not only really long and prehensile, but also gooey and slimy. I speak from first hand experience of being slimed by one.

Patterns of Celebration – Chinese New Year’s Aftermath

The remains of Chinese New Year in New York City
The streets of New York City’s Chinatown are littered with confetti and fireworks refuse after Chinese New Year celebrations, creating colorful patterns. The scrap of a Chinese newspaper adds to the cultural aspect of the image, I think.
